vaga #1 /22 Obsession 3
AQUAMARINE OR TURQUOISE or teal
Part XXII
This chapter, despite being one more obsession, I would like to suggest to my dear readers that they do not turn this page in 37 seconds, which would be expected since there are no stories, anecdotes, or narrations, it is purely an abstract chapter, a page of colour. I kindly ask you to gift me and give yourself 1.58 minutes to observe it.
This is not a theory of art, it is only what I perceive. Art expresses feelings, emotions, perceptions of the artist who shapes them. These are appreciated by the viewer, who may feel rejection, pleasure or indifference. Being abstract there are no recognisable images to base an intellectual appreciation on. Abstract art is sensorial, the visual through the composition of shapes, colours, lights, shadows, textures and movement between them. The visual sensation that I am inclined to, is for harmony, to interrelate perfect combinations between these or to provoke visual restlessness. Currently, I seek to capture it in photography, (previously in spacial sculptures) to go after the pleasure that pleases the eye, the eye takes it to the soul and the soul brings in peace.
Some naturally perceive art for their sensitivity, others learn to develop it and some never achieve it. This has nothing to do with intellectual or educational level, it is a fibre of the soul. There are people who cannot live without being in contact with that fibre in their daily lives. This art enters through the senses, the sight. I have seen very poor houses with colours painted either in a single frame, in another chapter I will talk about art in situations of poverty or lack of education and that it is present, it is something surprising to see and understand what is the soul that seeks beauty without rational explanations.
The psychology of colour is a field of study that is aimed at analysing the feeling of how we perceive and behave with different colours, as well as the emotions that these tones arouse in us. This has been studied more in depth by marketing, by saying companies design their logos taking into account the colours they use, because in this way they send a message to one or another consumer and their purpose is economic benefit. The psychology of colour is generalised, although they change from culture to culture as well and there is a common denominator. By way of making myself understood I give very general and superficial examples: Red; increases heart rate, produces more adrenaline, blood, passion, strength, bravery, attraction, it represents communism. Blue; this usually causes a feeling of calm but also sadness, depth, respect, it is used a lot in uniforms. Yellow, is expansive, joy, happiness, in Asia it is associated with royalty. Green, is relaxing to the human eye as well as being equal to nature, harmony, growth, exuberance, fertility, freshness, security, it is seen in money. Orange, cheerful, sociable, fun, it is used in party supplies. Violet, spirituality is seen in clergy clothes in different religious manifestations. Turquoise, is the balance between joy and serenity.
I am 100% sure that everyone has a favourite colour, mine is aquamarine or turquoise. The name turquoise means “Turkish stone”, the mineral turquoise is a phosphate chemical compound, quite rare in nature. The colour is formed with yellow and blue, which are both primary colours, the mixture of blue with yellow gives green, so it is the variation of proportions between the three colours that produces the enormous range of tones. This colour is also known as greenish blue, turquoise green, metallic colour and aquamarine, (because it is seen in low surface beaches with white sand and with the reflection of the sun) Now in Chile we also call it "calypso", the reason for this, I do not know. The name calypso has to do with Greek mythology, in addition to being a type of music originating in Trinidad Tobago. The colour in nature after the stone is seen in the feathers of the parrot and coral, it is extremely peculiar. Man has sought it out to imitate it
LIVING WITHOUT ART IS LIKE LIVING WITHOUT THE SUN
Another of my obsessions, the first, "rags in the sun", then the "brooms" now "turquoise" and more are coming. They are those things that the eye sees particularly among many things around and from far away. It is like an unconscious sensor that jumps out at you. With my dear friend Gonzalo, a painter, we always argued about the calypso, which was the exact calypso colour, he insisted that it was a shade of blue or green, we rarely agreed on the same opinion about the exact calypso. For me, all the nuances between blue and green are calypsos, perhaps because I love their varieties of tones without making those subtleties. They only seem beautiful, attractive to me and my eyes see them from far away wherever it is, even under the water. Now not all of them attract my attention, there are many calypsos that do not tell me anything they have to have something else, be it their texture, shine, the deterioration, It can be over metal, wood, fabric or an object.
The composition below is not random I worried about how to place them; ephemeral (liquid) versus concrete (solid), shiny versus opaque, wood versus metal etc ... each photo is valuable in itself. I part with the colour in nature; coral and fish, have been the ones that I have found in my wandering.
